Grand Prairie Advantage Academy’s DECA Club competed recently in the State Career Development Conference in Dallas, Texas. The five high school members of the club participated with another 5,000 students from all across Texas competing in 50 separate categories.

Jenny Le, a junior at Advantage Academy, competed in the Entrepreneurship Start-up Business Plan category. Her idea to create a monthly subscription box service with toys tailored for Autistic children that suit their interests and provides autistic information and resources for their parents took the Texas First Place trophy.

“I spent countless hours coming up and working on my idea. I remembered how difficult it was for my cousin’s parents after he was diagnosed with autism, so I based it off of him and their experiences,” said Le.

Her 15-minute presentation and written report earned her 99 out of possible 100 points from the DECA judges.

Le is now qualified to move forward to the DECA International Career Development Conference in Atlanta, Georgia in April 2018. She will compete, along with other 20,000 students from across the globe, in the Competitive Events Program.

DECA is an international organization focused on preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges worldwide. The Texas chapter of DECA is the largest in the globe, with over 14,000 members.

“We are a 20-year-old charter school and competed among the very best school districts in the state. We could not be more proud of Jenny and the other students because they did so well in a statewide competition and are now able to advance to the national level. This is so exciting!” said district spokesperson Sherri Busalacchi, “our high school DECA Club students and their advisor, Ms. Felecia Caruthers, have gone above and beyond. The DECA Club only started last year, and Ms. Caruthers has really helped get the club off the ground with a bang.”
