GPHS football coach Gary Bartel named Grand Prairie ISD Athletic Director

Grand Prairie ISD announced Thursday that Gary Bartel has been named as the District’s new Executive Director of Athletics. Bartel has been Head Football Coach/Athletic Coordinator at Grand Prairie High School since 2004. He takes the position following the resignation of Troy Mathieu who has accepted the athletic director position in Dallas ISD.

“I am excited about serving GPISD as the Executive Director of Athletics,” Bartel said. “I see us developing our student athletes with sound fundamentals to be champions on the field and in the classroom.”

Bartel has a long history both in Grand Prairie and in coaching. A graduate of Grand Prairie High School, he played collegiately at Texas Tech University where he was a three-year letterman.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Texas Tech, he held coaching positions at Texas Tech University, West Texas State University, the University of Texas at El Paso, the University of Texas at Arlington, Louisiana Tech University, University of Houston, and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette before returning to Grand Prairie.

“We are excited that Coach Bartel is moving into this new role,” said Superintendent Dr. Susan Hull. “He will continue to be a tremendous asset to the dynamic athletic program of Grand Prairie schools and its proud tradition.”
